Presidents Cup Bowling Competition 2012

Presidents Cup Bowls Winners. John Roberts Ray Lowe

Presidents Cup Bowls Consolation Competition Winners Chris Harding Steve Mann

Sunday, 15th July saw 30 members take part in the Club’s annual bowling day at the Hesketh Arms Bowling Club, when they compete for The B.J.P.O’Malley President’s Trophy. Fortunately, good weather had been specially ordered for the day and it was even warm enough for some members to appear wearing shorts – a rare opportunity in this poorest of Summers!

The players were drawn into pairs randomly and the competition took the form of a straight knockout with a consolation event for 1st Round losers. The 1st Round saw some extremely close games with the highlights being 21-20 wins for Dave Pennington and Rhoda Whitley over John Unsworth and Fran Stillwell and for Tony Livesey and Dave White against Mike Milne and Brian Stillwell. Both of these winning pairs were to progress through the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals.
The semi-final in the top half of the draw saw Dave and Rhoda face Ray Lowe and Jon Roberts, who had reached this stage with wins against Bobby Edwards and David Unsworth (21-16) and Gill Edwards and Norma White (21-10). In the other semi-final, Tony and Dave were to play George Hitchmough and Graham Meadow, who had overcome Pam Coxon and Gill Lloyd in the 1st Round and Bernard Lloyd and Jill Lloyd in the quarter-final.
The semi-final games could not have been closer and could have gone either way but it was Ray Lowe and Jon Roberts and Tony Livesey and Dave White who prevailed, both games finishing 21-20. After two tight semi-finals, it was expected that the final would be too close to call but it was Ray and Jon who were able to maintain their form of earlier rounds to win the final 21-11.
The Consolation Competition was won by Chris Harding and Steve Mann , who overcame Fran Stillwell and John Unsworth 21-14 in the final.
At the end of the bowling, the players retired to the Club, where the prizes were presented by Club President, Bernard O’Malley.
Thanks go to the Conservative Club’s Games Chairman, Mike Ditchfield and to Chris Harding (Bowling Club Chairman) for their work in organising this competition and to all those who helped out on the day.
